Mitchell Earl Summers, 57, of Amarillo died Friday, Nov. 2, 2011.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Pinnacle Community Church with Kurt Oheim officiating. Arrangements are by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive.

Mr. Summers was born Jan. 8, 1954, in Amarillo to Earl and T Jo Summers. He was raised in Amarillo, where he attended Tascosa High School before joining the Army in 1973. He passed away on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Summers worked as a house painter in Amarillo for many years. He worked at the Thomas E. Creek VA Hospital for several years, where he made many wonderful friendships. His life after retirement was devoted to being a dad and “Pop Pop.” He enjoyed taking his granddaughter to musical concerts as well as to hear the symphony and to the mountains on family fishing trips. He had a great love of music and the local talent that Amarillo has to offer. He also loved spending time with his dog Marley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved pal, “Darlin’.”

Survivors include a son, Mitchell Summers Jr. of Florida; a daughter, Marri “Pita” Borden; two granddaughters, Aniah Proby and Daja Proby; two brothers, Michael Kevin Summers and Jay Scott Summers; a sister, Celia Elaine Merriott; and his best friends, Angie Bowlin, Gary Thurman and Lydia Navarro.

Known Mitchell since 8th grade even though i didn't go to Crockett (he went all three years). I don't think he walked across the stage with us due to a lack of credits but he was in our class. Joined the military in 1973 and graduated from Frankfort American High School.
